Lots of choices when it comes to exercising

It doesn’t matter what age you are. Exercise is important for a long and healthy life. It becomes especially crucial when you reach the senior citizen years.

But everyone knows that. So why aren’t you exercising? It isn’t very easy, I know.

Exercise must be a habit, a lifetime habit. You can’t start and stop and think that it is doing you any good. I know you don’t have time or feel up to it. But if you are retired, you have the time. And there are lots of healthy activities that don’t even seem like exercise. It’s not a matter of doing pushups and sit-ups every day. Do things that you enjoy, like walking or playing golf or tennis.

Everyone knows exercise is good for your health. So why aren’t you doing it?

  • Lack of motivation is probably the number one reason you aren’t exercising. And that’s understandable. If you have lived a sedentary life its difficult to just jump into a routine.
  • Exercise wears you out. That’s why its important to start out slow and gradually build up your strength. Take your time.
  • You don’t have time. If you are retired, you know you have time.

What exercise?

There are so many activities you can do that count as exercise. Always check with your doctor before starting any type of exercise.

  • Walking is probably the best way to start out. You don’t have to walk far. Just add a little distance every day or so. And you can walk with other people which makes it more enjoyable.
  • Bike riding is another good one. it’s probably a step up from walking. but its great as well. If you haven’t been on a bike in a while take your time when you start out. Don’t forget to wear a helmet!
  • Hiking on a trail can be exhilarating. It’s great to take in the fresh air and the great outdoors. Hiking with others is recommended. Also, take some water with you.
  • Aqua aerobics is great for you as well as swimming laps.
  • Light weightlifting is also recommended. Check with your doctor first.

Benefits of exercise

  • Keeping your heart healthy is more important than ever when you become older. Diet also plays a big part to keep a healthy heart.
  • Your mood is elevated. exercise releases endorphins which in turn makes you happier.
  • Keeps your energy level higher. You won’t feel so tired all the time.
  • It strengthens your muscles. as we age we lose muscle mass. exercise will slow that down.
  • Helps you sleep

What if you aren’t mobile enough?

Not everyone can walk or swim or do other things because of lack of mobility. There is always chair exercises.
