Here are five suggestions in no order
Florida has always been the gold standard for retirees because of the weather and the lack of state income taxes. I like Florida. We have vacationed there many times. The weather is enticing, and the low taxes are significant, but you know all about hurricanes. That might be a little unnerving.
We have lived in Georgia for many years. Itโs a beautiful state with mountains in the north and farming in the south. Atlanta has a growing population and an affordable environment. There is excellent healthcare at Emory University Medical Center and many other fine hospitals. While it does get hot in the summer, there is rarely snow. It will get cold. Savannah is a great place to visit as well.
Delaware has an admirable reputation. The beaches where my family used to vacation are terrific but a little crowded in the summer. Surprisingly, the taxes are not as bad as you would think. The state is also friendly toward retirees.
North Carolina, where my mother-in-law grew up, can be split into two areas. The western part of the state has scenic mountains. The coastal region, the outer banks, has quiet and beautiful beaches. My wife’s family told me that a lot of folks from Florida have moved there. They wanted to escape the hurricanes and the lack of four seasons.
Right beside North Carolina is its southern neighbor, South Carolina. This is another state with gorgeous beaches, including Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach. These are very busy in the summer months. There are lots of great retirement communities there. And don’t forget about the Charleston area, which is a grand old city like Savannah. Hilton Head Island is ideal for golfers and the beaches are pretty good as well..
I know I have primarily Southern states on the list. I’m sure many folks would also have places like Arizona and New Mexico. I just wanted to highlight a few that I knew a little about.
Well, there are ten places to retire. While all these places look tempting, my wife and I will probably stay right here in the Peach State.
