My wife and I honeymooned in Savannah, Georgia, many years ago. Itโs delightful, with beautiful antebellum homes, fine dining, and an enchanting river walk. The pace is slow and leisurely. Travels in Savannah Georgia are perfect for older folks.
It is well worth the trip. This is especially true if you are older. You will enjoy leisurely walks in the beautiful parks lining the middle of town.
What makes Savannah Georgia so special?
There are so many answers to that question.
The town squares
There are 23 town squares in Savannah, all worth a stroll. Youโll see luscious gardens and grand oak trees with hanging moss.
The first four squares are,
Johnson Square โ The first square in Savannah was used as a meeting place for the first residents. It is still popular today with pubs, restaurants, and historic homes.
Wright Square – Savannah’s second square is lined with beautiful oak trees. Juliette Gordon Loweโs birthplace and the Chatham County Courthouse are also located there.

Ellis Square – Hosted the city market since 1733. It still has the city market and a dancing fountain where folks can enjoy the shade. There is also a statue of one of Savannahโs favorite sons, Johnny Mercer.
Telfair Square – Originally named St. James Square, it was changed to Telfair Square to honor Governor Telfair. Two of the cityโs finest museums, Telfair and Jepson, are located there.
City tours, including lots of Ghost tours
There are many tours to take in Savannah. But my wife and I enjoyed the ghost tours, either by walking or riding a trolley.

Dining
Dining in Savannah Georgia offers an unforgettable experience with iconic establishments like The Olde Pink House and Mrs. Wilkes’ Dining Room. The Olde Pink House is a historic mansion. It serves Southern-inspired fine dining in an elegant yet charming atmosphere. The setting is filled with flickering candles and rich history. In contrast, Mrs. Wilkes’ Dining Room provides a cozy, communal dining experience. Guests share tables and enjoy hearty, home-cooked Southern favorites. The food is served family-style. Both venues capture the spirit of Savannah’s hospitality and culinary traditions, making them must-visit destinations.
The Pirate House is also a favorite of mine as well. It has a lot of history behind it.
Historic River Walk
What an enchanting place for a stroll, especially at night. The beautiful Savannah River is on one side, and the other is lined with restaurants and pubs. Very enjoyable.
Tybee Island
Tybee Island is located off the coast of Georgia. It is a charming barrier island known for its sandy beaches. The island also features a historic lighthouse and a laid-back vibe. Visitors can enjoy activities like kayaking, birdwatching, and exploring the Tybee Island Marine Science Center. With its vibrant local culture and delicious seafood, itโs a perfect getaway for relaxation and adventure.
I hope you get a chance travel to Savannah and take in all the history, maybe even a tour. And donโt forget to eat at the Pirate House.
