There are many activities you want to pursue during retirement. One idea can be rewarding: going back to college, a rewarding adventure.

College again?

Or maybe itโ€™s for the first time. It wouldnโ€™t be like when you spent at least four years out of high school. Like most students, your goal was to find something to make a living from.

That doesnโ€™t have to be the case this time. You choose any curriculum you like without worrying about whether you can find a job from your degree.

You donโ€™t even have to think about getting a degree. Going back to college is an accomplishment, but taking the courses should be rewarding enough.

Is it going to be awkward?

That shouldnโ€™t be your mindset going into the adventure of higher learning. Youโ€™ve heard a million times that it isnโ€™t too late to learn. I believe most younger students would appreciate your effort in going back to college.

I havenโ€™t been in school in years; can I still cut it?

I’m sure you can still read textbooks, take notes, and take tests and quizzes. Your enthusiasm would propel you to handle all those things that come with being an older student.

And remember, if you are studying something you really love, it wonโ€™t feel like work. This is true for subjects like music or art.

Other older students

You probably wonโ€™t be the only one your age taking classes. A growing number of senior citizens means more and more will consider returning to school. You wonโ€™t stick out like a sore thumb. No one will laugh at you. There is more acceptance now than ever.

If isolation is a problem for you in your senior years, college is just right. Meeting new friends can be a challenge, and this make it easier.

Things to consider when going back to college

If you find that you are having a hard time with the courses, seek help. Professors and other students will more than help you. You just have to ask.

Okay, how am I going to pay for this?

Cost is always on the mind of a retiree, and with good reason, things are expensive. Luckily, education for seniors over the age of 62 can be considerably cheaper than for younger students.

Iโ€™m shy around people and donโ€™t know if I can sit in a large classroom without feeling nervous.

Thatโ€™s understandable. So, maybe you should start an online course and work independently from home. Iโ€™ve taken many of them, and they are very rewarding.

Get back in the groove of study habits

Make sure to block out time to study. Develop a habit of keeping up with your studies. Go at 100 percent.
